Paddlepicked exists to answer one question honestly: which gear actually fits the way you play? Here is exactly how we work that out — and what we don’t do.
What we do
1. We verify specs with the manufacturer
Weight, core thickness, face material, grip circumference, and length come from the manufacturer’s own spec sheet — not the marketing page, and not a retailer’s copy-and-paste listing. Where a brand publishes a range rather than a figure, we say so. Where two sources disagree, we say that too.
2. We track the USA Pickleball approved list
USA Pickleball (USAP) tests paddles for surface roughness and deflection, and publishes the list of paddles legal for sanctioned tournament play. Paddles get added — and paddles get delisted. We check the current status of every paddle we recommend and flag it on the page. That status is a fact about the paddle, not an endorsement of this site.
3. We read owner reviews at scale — the ones written after month three
A first-week review tells you about the packaging. A three-month review tells you whether the grip wore smooth, whether the edge guard rattled loose, and whether the face still bites the ball. We read owner reviews in volume across retailers and player communities, looking for the patterns that repeat rather than the loudest single opinion.
4. We screen for recalls
Before anything gets recommended, we check it against active safety notices and recalls, including those published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. We re-check on our refresh cycle, and we pull or down-rank anything affected.
5. We segment, then we stay current
“Best paddle” is not one question. It is a different answer for a fast-swinging singles player, for a control-first dinker, and for someone buying a first paddle next week on a tight budget. So we sort by play style, skill level, and price band — and we date every guide and update it when the facts move.
What we don’t do
We don’t run a lab and we won’t pretend to. We segment, structure, and stay current — so the paddle that fits your game is the one you actually buy.
- We don’t claim hands-on testing. Plenty of good sites hit balls with every paddle and tell you how it felt. We are not one of them, and we won’t borrow their language. If you ever read “we tested” on this site, it is a mistake — tell us and we will fix it.
- We don’t invent experts. There is no in-house coach, no certified fitter, and no “reviewed by” byline. What we have is research done carefully and shown openly.
- We don’t quote live prices. Prices move daily and stale numbers mislead. We use price bands so you can see where a paddle sits in the market, then you check the real number at the retailer.
- We don’t give medical advice. We will tell you how a shoe is built and how it fits. We won’t tell you it prevents injuries.
When we get it wrong
Specifications change quietly, paddles get delisted, and models are discontinued without notice. If something here is out of date or plainly wrong, we would rather hear it than leave it standing — tell us what we got wrong.
